Beyond Basics
Beyond Basics is a child-centered program that brings targeted reading, writing and other literacy and self-expression programs to students in grades pre-K through 12. Beyond Basics staff and volunteers get children reading at grade level in just 6 weeks! We focus our efforts on children in poorest performing public schools. All of our programs support literacy, self-expression, building self-esteem and educational tools for being successful. Read to Rise Tutoring Program: Students in our reading program achieve grade level movement after 6 weeks of intensive one-on-one tutoring. We bring a variety of programs that assist the student in learning to read. Publishing Center: We run an onsite Publishing Center where students write original stories and receive assistance with editing tasks. Once complete, their story is bound with a hard cover. Art with the Masters:We provide focused instruction in a small group setting where students learn about art masters and apply these lessons to their projects. Expanding Horizons: Students participate in a variety of cultural and professional activities designed to promote literacy while encouraging them to broaden their perspectives and become lifelong learners. We have done this work for more than a decade in several Detroit Public Schools (DPS). Please visit our website for more information>
