Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan is a youth development organization providing a positive environment that enables its youth members to become self-reliant, responsible, caring adults. Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan’s Project STARS (Strategically Targeting At-Risk Students) program is designed for middle school students (grades 6-9) identified as being at-risk of school failure and potential dropout. Programming includes mentoring, homework help and a summer learning program. The program provides struggling students with an educational support system to help them overcome obstacles that can impede academic success.  The program was launched at the beginning of 2010 and has nearly 300 youth enrolled with another 200 youth slated to join the program during the 2011-12 school year.  Project STARS participants are identified by parents and school personnel due to their poor school performance, attendance or attitude. By focusing on each student’s ABCs (attendance, behavior and course failure), Project STARS helps struggling students receive the academic help they need while positive interactions with caring adult staff and mentors help to strengthen the student’s belief in their ability to succeed. I am extremely impressed with the results the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern MIchigan generate. The young people I have encountered are motivated, polite, goal-oriented and appreciative of the opportunities afforded them through the Clubs. It is obvious that the staff in each location truly care about their members.
