Detroit Institute for Children, The

For almost 100 years, the Detroit Institute for Children (DIC) has been one of the largest stand-alone clinics providing life-changing medical and rehabilitative care to special needs children. We truly fill a void in the Metro Detroit healthcare system. We are available to all children, including children from inner city, low-income families with little to no insurance, who are generally denied elsewhere. On average, we receive reimbursement of only 38% of the actual service cost from Medicaid sponsored insurance plans. In some cases, necessary treatments are not reimbursed by insurance coverage at all. On an annual basis, the DIC subsidizes well over a million dollars of uncompensated care for our children.

We define children by what they can achieve, not by what they can’t. The skills our children develop as a result of our therapy last a lifetime. Because of our services, children take their first steps, say their first words, and feed themselves for the first time, often in cases where their families were told these children would never be capable of doing so.  Thanks to community support, we provided almost 16,500 appointments in FY12. But we continue to see more and more children needing our care while insurance coverage continues to be cut. To continue helping these children, we need you.  For more information about the DIC, please visit our website atwww.detroitchildren.org.
