Focus: HOPE

Established in 1968 in the wake of the previous summer’s civil unrest in Detroit, Focus: HOPE’s mission is to use “intelligent and practical action to overcome racism, poverty, and injustice.” In pursuit of this mission, Focus: HOPE offers programming in three areas: basic needs (food), workforce development, and neighborhood revitalization. Currently, Focus: HOPE provides food to 42,000 senior citizens, mothers and children each month through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which it has administered in southeast Michigan for almost 40 years.  Focus: HOPE provides a range of career training and adult education programs.  The Focus: HOPE Center for Children provides high-quality childcare and youth development.  Finally, Focus: HOPE is engaged in implementing an important and innovative place-based initiative around its campus called the HOPE Village Initiative. Through an array of partnerships, programs, and services, Focus: HOPE is leading an effort to transform these neighborhoods into areas of opportunity. Focus: HOPE is working with local schools, organizations, businesses, and volunteers to provide the youth of the community with every opportunity for success in their education and development from cradle to college and career.
