Seedlings Braille Books for Children
“In the past, braille books were scarce and very expensive, making it difficult for blind children to obtain the materials they need to read and succeed. For 25 years, we have been working hard to change this … to give blind children the same chances that sighted children have to learn to read and love to read. Over the years, I have become increasingly committed to getting braille books into the hands of the
very young children: toddlers and preschoolers. Studies have shown that children need to be surrounded by books at a very early age in order to become good readers.”
“The grant from Art Van enabled us to make over 1,000 Print-and-Braille Books available on loan for all the visually impaired toddlers and preschoolers of Michigan. With access to this large pool of braille books, preschool teachers now have the materials needed to encourage early braille reading and parents have been able to nurture the love of reading at home.”
